I used to have this on video cassette!!! Eddie Torresand his dancers are outstanding!!
Hey great job sharing this - Eddie is so great at combining tech discussion with the feel. One thing I am confused about. Eddie explains everything in A Tiempo timing 123 567 (his famous teaching step) but various times the dances actually dance On2 contratiempo, power 2 and classic mambo which ever definition you use - 823 467 . At 21:16 it is clear On2 contratiempo and other partner dance sections. Have I missed something in the explanations or did the dancers just slip over into it? I haven't watched enough of Eddie's dances to be categoric but I have seen him use a lot of on2 contrateimpo and students say this is what he taught. Just to underline this is not criticism, just the keen interest of somebody digging into on 2 for the first time. If I can ever dance 5% of Eddie then I'll be happy. Thanks again.
RIP Angel Ortiz

This is dance in 2 and not in 1, right?
Eddie dances in the video on 2-3-4 & 6-7-8. Pay attention to the pum-pam either 8 or 4 and he puts his foot down! And everything is logical - this is a dance on two and six, as in the Cuban son!!
@art_latina: I completely agree with you.
Почти сальса , только не касино! Кто заметил, что танцуется стиль на 2 и 6! Как кубинский сон!
ET says 123-567 but the couple are actually stepping on 234-678. This is how all the confusion around on2 began
Nope... He's counting 123 567...🤷🏾♂️ Listen to the congas. The slap on the congas is 2 and 6.
Yes.,sir. Because it's exactly what real mambo is! 123-567 is just a system to learn basics for the beginners. But when you start dancing totally with the music and it's energy, it's always become 234 - 678 - exactly the same as son. But sad truth is that no one instructor will tell you about it - it's not got for salsa teaching business.
@@ivanmatvienko1018 NY style is an hybrid indeed, however it still has reasons to be danced that way IMO because it fits rhythms which came after son, like campana of pachanca. I prefer 234-678 when the music is more sonish and NY when it’s more fluid and melodic, and switch when music changes
@@melphiss Nice point. As for me I prefer alway keep 234-678 when it's 2/3 clave(which is 95% of the music) because it's energy, base, kongas are always on 4 and 8, so it feel very exciting and fully with the music. Nonetheless when in those rare cases it's 3/2 clave music, then it's better to dance on 123-567, because base and clave energy are on 1 and 5
Eddie Torres NY Style On2 -> 1,2,3...5,6,7 Mambo / Son / Palladium / Power 2 -> 2,3,4...6,7,8 That's it. It's not wrong, it's another way of stepping the 2. Eddie Style makes easier dance on2 for the people that don't find the 2 in the music, so it always starts with 1, like melody. The problem with this video is when Eddie explains and dances, he counts and dance like NY Style. But when a colorful couple appears making a demo, they are dancing mambo, not Eddie Style. So it's confusing.
So Eddie dances on2, but the demonstrations are on1, right?
@@AlexisJunior No, they are dancing also on2, but "mambo" (2,3,4...) instead of "ny Eddie style" (1,2,3...). On2 means "Break on the second time".
@@bailopinto Is the footprint different? I mean the "1" is NY Style is the same, only the tread changes? I'm a bit lost. I usually dance on1, would this be a problem if I follow the video? Thanks in advance
@@AlexisJunior in on1, the left foot steps forward in the first time ( can be 1 or 5), on2 the left foot steps forward on the second time (can be 2 or 6)
Thank you very much, excellent explanation! :)@@bailopinto
Un vídeo antiguo y tan de actualidad, unas figuras siempre bonitas y a la perfeccion
I always found Eddie Torres to have a fantastic voice. A voice is an instrument as well and he has fantastic tone and diction in his voice. His voice definitely inspires movement.
Great viedo, thank you! Last name of Carlos please, or how to find more dances of him?
Esto es salsa caleña
que bonito
Salsa King of LA for many years best of luck to Alex!
Can't you people see that they don't step on 5 and 1, but on 4 and 8? The whole video is incoherent. This "Eddie Torres Style" has been incoherent from the onset. People don't dance like that theory says. People dance 234-678.
it is not 234 678, it is a slurring into the 4 and 8, that is not a new observation, i at least know it since the early 2000s; the 234 678 is the classic Mambo-approach, that is not what is danced here, guys like Angel Rodriguez in New York did dance it in those times and called it Power 2, also called Power 2 Salsa; master students liek Frankie Martinez of Eddie dance a proper 123 567, well nevertheless call it Mambo; thus there is a lot of confusion going on; the point is, that in origin the dance on the music derives from Son Cubano and there the people don't dance based on Westerner logic, also not in-frame the measures and also contrary to 123 567 fully upbeat, one could say that Cubans dance a contratiempo 8and1 2,3 4and5 6,7 which would be the correct way to dance a true Mambo, but that also means, and that is what is the total case in Cuba that the 8 marks the start of what is danced, and also what is danced is not the rhythmics of Ran Kan Kan in Cuba but the soul, the groove, THE TUMBAO, that is what Tumbao actually means, thus the problem is, that there was not really the authentic music theory applied when Eddie developed his countings starting from his approach that he accentuates a break on the slap of the Conga; there is a lot more confusion, also how NYricans play the bass often wrong, the Bass is what expresses most the Tumbao, there is so much to add, what is confused and told the way it was told and thus promoted; there is nothing wrong the way Eddie teaches and dances, but it has nothing to do what the origin of the music created by Israel Cachao Lopez together with his brother Oreste had in mind with Mambo and also nothing with how Cubans always played that music and danced it a contratiempo, well of course it needs the transfer on the line, if one wants so, but that is neither an 123 567, neither a 234 678; the slurring into the 4 and 8 that Eddie does comes exactly from this real truth, that the 4 and the 8 need not only some place but have a total other meaning and importance in the genuine music; Ran Kan Kan is a way Tito Puente as Puerto Rican timbales player changed the character of the original concept of this music of Afro-Cuban Jazz into a more timbales and trumpets- and trombones heavy noisy composition that then was further transfered into Salsa in the Fania times, well all is fine, but only there is one big misconception that Mambo is a Cuban term with Afro-Cuban heritage and thus meaning and it means dancing the Tumbao and that sure has a total other logic then the way it is told here; nevertheless Eddie Torres deserves a great tribute as the guy who transported Salsa NY style through time and he is nice enough to know that he was a flamboyant wild dancers at his start and not a music theory expert or an expert about the Cuban origin of all of this music- and dance-wise; to make it a true Mambo it needs to keep all this genuine character that it has, when it is danced in locations like the conjunto folklorico in Habana or in the ISA or in the ENA, thus the higher institutes of Art and dance and education in Cuba

Hey! Thanks for sharing this. Are you gonna upload volumes 2 & 3 on your channel?
These days, if a dancer forcibly pulls a person who is romantically involved out of the nightclub table onto the dance floor to dance by surprise and without asking--that person had severely breached nightclub salsa ettiquette. This is sexual harassment and it will not be tolerated, and that puller will likely be told to leave the salsa nightclub immediately. Repeat offenses of this similar breach can lead to that offending person being banned from that club.
"Mambo Gozon" - roughly translates as "Mambo for Big Enjoyment".
I love mixing 2 of my favorite things 2gether ,...... Prince music with Salsa dancing..... Try stepping these kool Salsa patterns 2 the song " House Quake " by Prince
Alex Dasilva was a smooth MF back in the days....Mixing Argentine tango into some of his Choreography .... Now I'm a Salsa instructor & I like many others try 2 emulate his LA style on one. .. I would even call this style " Fantasia "..like Argentine tango......which is 2 say it's a fancy /highly stylize way of dancing . Thanks 4 posting..
This is by far the best instructional video ever, and I can sincerely recommend it to any dance enthusiast (not just bachata dancers). It captures the essence of dance in general and makes you think outside of the box instead of just teaching structure and more structure like most videos. really cool!

Gracias por estos pasos ,me encanta este estilo casino ,y me gustaría que las mujeres usaran más lentejuelas cuando salen de rumba nos vemos bonitas con vestidos .
Love it
Alex!!! Where are you teaching? I miss you xxoo

Those are original videos cassettes from Eddie Torres. I lost mine and glad I found them. Thanks.
Oh no, the very Eddie Torres counting 123 567 but the dancers step at 234 678. (see 7:19) That's why it took me so much to understand NY style
Wait, so what do I see here? Mambo = Nightclub = On 2 = 234, 678?
234 for the entire series lol. I feel vindicated. I dance 234.5 678.5 (actually I start on the 8. It's how inlrsrned Son in Cuba and it keeps je on beat best.
I agree. Eddie Torres has done a fantastic job in growing on2 but it's now up to the future generations to improve the methodology and teaching so it keeps growing.
Why don't we call things by their name? Eddie Torres simply screwed up. He didn't really know what he was doing, and he hasn't acknowledged it yet. These videos are incoherent, and they describe a system of dancing that nobody, not even him, uses.
it took so much to understand NY style bc youre overthinking. Jus break on 2 and 6, the rest is up to your artistry. Sometimes we step on 1, sometimes we pause on 1. WHo cares? Its dance, art and improvisition. Thats' why he's a legend and the King.

It is funny to see how INCOHERENT the video is. The first part of the video clearly says that on beats 4 and 8 the foot is UP IN THE AIR, and it doesn't touch the floor until five. And the smiley dancers later don't do that. They just don't. They put the foot on the floor on 4 and 8, and do the pause on 5 and 1. Hilarious. And this is Eddie Torres approved. I can't believe it.
you're right. I haven't seen the whole video but they are dancing what I think it's called Palladium Style. They are clearly steping on the first beat of the conga, the 8s and the 4s.
I noticed the same. Eddie Torres style you step on 1-2-3 & 5-6-7 as explained, and dancers are stepping on those counts when they are showing some moves, eg. Suzie Q, Cuban step, w/e. BUT when they are doing the basic steps, they are stepping on 2-3-4 & 6-7-8 which is the classic Palladium style afaik. For a beginner this might get quite confusing very fast. Just want to add I'm in no way dissing on Eddie and on his style, as I love his On2 style. It's just strange that they left it like this on an instructional video when it's clearly noticeable.
@@Jowanson33 Well... I don't really know if we should revise this "on 2 style" entirely and face reality: do people ever dance like the theory says in real salsa floors?
@neuropakho As a matter of fact: unfortunately yes, they (we) do! Here in The Netherlands (and in other countries in Europe) that is still the way many/most dance schools teach On2 to this day. Very confusing, but I'm glad people are starting to notice the conflict.
Her swag is celia official😍👌👍
